Sheffield is our home

The Sheffield Retail Development Group’s vision is to rebuild a city centre that creates a lasting legacy, one that current and future generations will be proud of.

This is about more than just shopping; it’s a holistic plan to enhance how we all live, work, relax, and play. We intend to create a vibrant, integrated urban environment that enriches the experience of living our lives in this great Yorkshire city.

Our design creates a true mixed-use destination, incorporating cutting-edge technology and new retail concepts. The development will feature a new indoor and outdoor shopping centre with John Lewis at its heart, alongside modern office spaces, exciting leisure venues, and high-quality residential apartments.

There will be a new public plaza, designed to rival its continental counterparts. At the edge of the plaza will be the new Yorkshire Conservatoire, a world-class music school that will bring the space to life. Much like Covent Garden, you can expect to stumble across impromptu performances from students and professional artists, creating a constant cultural buzz.

Over a thousand secure parking spaces will be conveniently hidden beneath the plaza. We’re even looking at incorporating an art gallery and sculpture park to enjoy as you walk from your car or bus into the new heart of the city.

As a privately funded venture, SRDG is entirely independent of the council and Hammerson. Our proposal is to purchase the entire site previously proposed by Hammerson for their Sevenstone scheme, along with additional adjacent properties, to deliver a more comprehensive and integrated regeneration.

Even before the previous proposal was abandoned, we were working diligently behind the scenes. We have been in continuous dialogue with key stakeholders and are working in close collaboration with John Lewis to ensure they remain a cornerstone of Sheffield’s retail offer for years to come. Our ongoing discussions also include other major and independent retailers, investors, the council, internationally renowned designers, and Tier 1 contractors. Everyone is excited at the opportunity to be part of a team that will revolutionise the regeneration of city centres.

We have assembled an exceptional, world-class delivery team, combining international expertise with a deep-rooted understanding of our city. Our partners include industry leaders such as Chapman Taylor architects, Capita, and KPMG, and we are backed by an international bank. Communications are handled by HR Media, with retail expertise provided by Central Retail.

Uniquely, our team also includes an internationally renowned composer and conductor, who is working with SRDG to create the new Yorkshire Conservatoire and orchestra as part of the regeneration.

Crucially, this entire team is locally led, ensuring the vision is driven by people who are passionate about Sheffield’s future. We want to unlock the city’s true potential and make it the vibrant destination we all know it can be.

As a Sheffield-based group, SRDG is committed to bringing half a billion pounds of new investment into the city and, just as importantly, keeping the economic benefits here to foster sustainable local prosperity.

Our team is capable. Our plans are fundable. We know the right people. We are ready to deliver a new heart to our city centre.

SRDG Focus Group Report: Monday 27th April 2015

On Monday, 27th April 2015, we held our first public focus group, and the response from the citizens and business community of Sheffield was nothing short of outstanding.

We invited every Sheffielder to be an integral part of the process, and the enthusiastic turnout at the Royal Victoria Hotel powerfully demonstrated the city’s collective passion for its future.

The interactive, workshop-style session proved invaluable, drawing a diverse and representative group from Sheffield’s many communities, alongside professionals from architecture and planning, respected local business owners, and key public sector representatives.

It was far more than a presentation; it was a truly collaborative event where attendees engaged in robust, constructive discussions with our team about the project’s initial concepts.

Early design strategies and preliminary proposals were shared openly, with comments invited on how these could be enhanced to meet community aspirations.

The wealth of local knowledge, lived experience, and insightful feedback shared during these conversations has been instrumental in shaping and refining our proposals, ensuring our shared vision for a dynamic city centre is genuinely co-created with, and for, the people of Sheffield.
